Pope adds to Smith’s run spree as Surrey pile on the pressure against Leicestershire

Ollie Pope’s 103 and Jamie Smith’s 166 helped Surrey’s cluster of England batters take control against Leicestershire on another dominant day in the County Championship.

By the midpoint of the fifth day of action in the second round of fixtures, Pope had become the 11th player to score a century in Division One this season. Five of those hundreds have come from Surrey players, underlining the depth of the reigning power in the competition. Smith, meanwhile, has already registered two centuries this campaign.

The pre-season title favourites drew their opening match, but their early-season form is beginning to look increasingly threatening. In this contest, and more broadly across the start of the campaign, Surrey have made a strong impression. They reached stumps on 412 for six, having put Leicestershire under sustained pressure with the bat.

For Leicestershire, the picture was far less encouraging. Newly promoted back to the top flight, they are still adjusting to life in Division One after last season’s promotion, and this outing again exposed the gap they are trying to bridge.

Having already lost to Sussex in their season opener, they struggled to make inroads here as Smith and Pope moved towards their hundreds with relative ease. By the second session, Leicestershire looked short of confidence, short of ideas and short of the quality needed to disrupt Surrey’s rhythm.

There were small signs of encouragement later in the day, when Leicestershire picked up a couple of late wickets. Even so, the scoreboard offered little comfort, and Surrey remained in a commanding position by the close.

The wider context is just as striking as the individual performances. Surrey’s batting order is stacked with players who have spent time in England colours, and that international experience is showing in the county game. With Pope and Smith adding major runs, the side once again demonstrated why they were viewed as the leading title contenders before a ball was bowled.

Smith’s 166 was the standout innings of the day, while Pope’s 103 further strengthened Surrey’s grip on the match. Together, they added to a pattern that is becoming familiar early in the season: Surrey compiling big scores, applying pressure, and forcing opponents to spend long periods in the field.

Leicestershire, by contrast, will take little from the day other than the reminder of the challenge that awaits them this season. Promotion has brought them back to the level where the margin for error is smaller and the punishment for any lapse can be severe. Against a side as deep and polished as Surrey, that gap was laid bare.

With Surrey ending the day in such a strong position, the match now appears heavily tilted in their favour. And with Pope and Smith in form, the county game may have to get used to more of the same from a side that already looks every bit the championship force many expected them to be.
