Islamabad braces for US-Iran talks as Trump raises doubts over ceasefire

Army units have been deployed in Pakistan’s capital as Islamabad prepares to host negotiations between the United States and Iran. The talks are expected to begin against a backdrop of growing strain on an already fragile ceasefire, with new accusations and military action adding to the uncertainty.

Donald Trump further complicated the situation late Thursday by casting doubt on whether Tehran was meeting its commitments. In a post on Truth Social, he accused Iran of doing “a very poor job” in upholding promises related to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy shipments.

Trump said Iran was being “dishonorable” by not allowing oil to pass through the strait. “That is not the agreement we have!” he wrote.

The agreement also included an Iranian commitment to lift its near-total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been linked to the worst-ever disruption to global energy supplies. Trump’s remarks suggested that he believes Tehran is failing to carry out that part of the deal.

At the same time, the ceasefire faced additional pressure after Israel attacked Lebanon. Iran said that move violated the truce, underscoring how quickly the arrangement is being tested on multiple fronts.

The situation remains fluid, and the negotiations in Islamabad are set to take place while tensions remain high. The capital’s security preparations reflect the seriousness of the moment, as officials try to manage a diplomatic process unfolding amid military and political uncertainty.

The developing nature of the conflict means there are still many unanswered questions about whether the ceasefire can hold, and whether the discussions between the US and Iran can ease the growing strain. For now, the truce appears to be under more pressure, not less, as key players dispute what was agreed and whether the terms are being honored.

In another development, the day also brought an unexpectedly timed intervention from Melania Trump, whose comments prompted confusion over why she had chosen to speak out at this moment. Her remarks appeared to raise questions about whether her husband had been aware in advance that she intended to draw attention to the issue.

Melania Trump ultimately called on Congress to give survivors of Jeffrey Epstein a public hearing so they could help uncover the truth. Her request was quickly endorsed by Democrat Ro Khanna and Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace.

The speech added another layer of political intrigue to a day already marked by tension over diplomacy, ceasefire violations and the continuing fallout from the conflict. As events continue to develop, attention is now focused on whether the Islamabad talks can produce any stability at all.
