Arne Slot backs Liverpool to deliver ‘great performance’ against PSG

Arne Slot has insisted Liverpool are not facing an impossible challenge as they prepare to meet Paris Saint-Germain again in the Champions League quarter-finals, but he said they will need a perfect performance to progress.

Liverpool trail 2-0 after last week’s first leg at the Parc des Princes, where PSG were clearly the better side and could have won by a wider margin. The return match takes place at Anfield on Tuesday, and Liverpool will need another memorable European comeback if they are to keep their hopes of silverware alive.

Slot said there is still belief within the Liverpool camp that they can produce something special. His message was that the team can compete with the French side, but only if they reach the highest possible level across the full 90 minutes.

The result in Paris left Liverpool with a difficult route back into the tie, yet the Dutch manager was not writing off his players. Instead, he framed the task as demanding rather than impossible, with Anfield once again expected to play a major role in the atmosphere around the match.

PSG head coach Luis Enrique, however, is not taking the return leg lightly. He told his players to beware of “pitfalls” and said that talk of Liverpool’s first-leg defeat being a straightforward basis for qualification would be “a trap”.

That warning reflected PSG’s view that the tie is still open despite their two-goal advantage. While they dominated much of the opening match, Enrique suggested his side must remain alert to the possibility of a turnaround in front of Liverpool’s home crowd.

The first leg offered Liverpool little encouragement, with PSG superior in most areas and in control for long stretches. Even so, Slot’s comments suggest there is confidence that the atmosphere at Anfield can help generate the kind of performance required to unsettle the European champions.

For Liverpool, the equation is simple: they must score early, stay disciplined, and avoid giving PSG the kind of opportunities that made the first meeting so difficult. For PSG, the message from Enrique is equally clear — do not assume the tie is settled just because the first leg went their way.

Tuesday’s match now carries the weight of a classic European night for Liverpool, with their season’s hopes hanging on whether they can find the response Slot is demanding. The manager believes a “great performance” is possible; the challenge is delivering it when it matters most.
