Cristian Romero feared to miss the rest of Spurs’ season after knee injury

Tottenham’s worrying run has been given another setback, with captain Cristian Romero feared to be out for the remainder of the season after an injury in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland.

Romero left the field in tears after 70 minutes, following a collision with Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey that caused the defender to crash into his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky. The Argentina international is believed to have suffered medial knee ligament damage.

Early estimates suggest the injury could take around eight weeks to heal, which would rule him out for the rest of the club season. Even so, there is still a possibility that Romero could recover in time for the World Cup.

The loss of Romero is a major concern for Tottenham, who are already dealing with deepening relegation worries. As captain and one of the team’s most important players, his absence would further weaken a side trying to steady itself at a difficult stage of the campaign.

Sunday’s result added to Spurs’ problems on the pitch, and the injury to Romero has only increased the sense of alarm around the club. A player of his experience and leadership is difficult to replace at any point, and especially so with the season entering its final stretch.

Further assessment will determine the full extent of the damage, but for now Tottenham are preparing for the possibility that their captain will not play again this season.
