Traffic stop in Northern California leads authorities to two homicide victims

A routine traffic stop in Northern California turned into a homicide investigation on Easter Sunday morning after officers pulled over a Chevrolet Suburban in Clearlake and found what authorities described as a gruesome scene inside the vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol said the stop was made for a suspected registration violation. Clearlake is about 100 miles north-east of San Francisco.

According to the CHP, officers saw large amounts of blood and an unresponsive man in the rear seat of the SUV. The discovery led investigators to two homicide victims.

Authorities said the driver and a passenger were arrested in connection with the killings. The passenger allegedly tried to run when officers stopped the vehicle, but was quickly detained.

The highway patrol said in a statement that the two people in custody include the person driving the vehicle and the passenger. Officials have not released additional details about the victims or the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The case began as a traffic stop, but it quickly escalated into a homicide investigation. Law enforcement officials have not said what relationship, if any, existed between the suspects and the victims, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Clearlake, located in Northern California, became the focus of the inquiry after officers noticed signs of violence inside the vehicle. The CHP’s account indicates that the stop itself was routine, but the evidence found in the Suburban changed the course of the encounter immediately.

Further information has not yet been provided by authorities.
