Watkins strikes twice as Aston Villa seize control against Bologna

Ollie Watkins was the decisive figure in Italy as Aston Villa took command of their Europa League quarter-final tie with a 3-1 first-leg win over Bologna.

The striker scored twice after the break, turning a tight and often difficult contest into a comfortable advantage for Unai Emery’s side ahead of the return leg in Birmingham. Ezri Konsa had earlier opened the scoring, and all three Villa goals came in a match that was influenced in part by errors from the home side.

Despite the final scoreline, Bologna were far from outplayed for the entire evening. The Serie A side enjoyed long periods of pressure and possession, creating a lively atmosphere and putting Villa under significant strain at times. The game did not unfold as a one-sided away win, but Villa proved more clinical when chances arrived.

Villa take advantage of key mistakes

Konsa’s goal came on the cusp of half-time after Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia made a costly mistake, allowing Villa to move in front at an important moment. That goal changed the shape of the contest, giving the visitors a lead to protect after a first half in which Bologna had looked capable of making life difficult.

Villa then managed the match well after the interval. Watkins, who had already been a constant threat, added a second half brace to put the tie firmly in Villa’s control. His finishing gave the English side a lead that Bologna will now have to overturn in the second leg.

Bologna did eventually find a response through Jonathan Rowe, the Englishman who scored late on to keep the home crowd believing. But any momentum that goal might have created was short-lived.

Late third seals a strong position

Villa reacted to Bologna’s late strike by scoring again in injury time, restoring and extending their cushion before the final whistle. That third goal left them with a comfortable advantage and the prospect of reaching the semi-finals looking increasingly realistic.

The result means Villa return to Birmingham in a powerful position, with Watkins’ double likely to stand out as the key contribution in a match that combined resilience, opportunism and decisive finishing. Bologna had their moments, but Villa made the most of the errors that came their way and produced the goals that mattered most.
