The cost of living crisis and a rise in the number of people experiencing mental health difficulties are being linked to an increase in large-scale animal rescue incidents across England and Wales, according to an RSPCA superintendent.
The charity said it dealt with 75 incidents last year involving 100 or more animals living in one property, highlighting the scale of the problem rescuers are now confronting.
The warning comes as the RSPCA this week confirmed that a photograph showing more than 250 poodle-cross dogs found at a property in the UK was genuine and not generated using artificial intelligence.
The charity took in 87 of the dogs, while the rest were cared for by the Dogs Trust, another animal welfare organisation.
Cases involving very large numbers of animals can place intense pressure on rescue teams and partner charities, requiring extensive coordination to remove, house and care for the animals involved.
The RSPCA’s comments suggest that financial strain and wider social pressures may be contributing to situations in which animals are kept in overcrowded and unsuitable conditions before authorities are called in.
With 75 multi-animal incidents recorded in a single year, the charity says this is not an isolated problem but part of a broader trend affecting its work across England and Wales.
The episode involving the poodle-cross dogs has also drawn attention because of the scale of the rescue and the need for the RSPCA to publicly address false claims that the image had been manipulated.
As rescue charities continue to manage these cases, the RSPCA says the combination of economic hardship and mental health challenges is contributing to a growing animal welfare burden.
