Australia on the brink of Billie Jean King Cup exit after Talia Gibson upset by British teenager

Australia’s push to secure a place in the Billie Jean King Cup finals has got off to the worst possible start in Melbourne, with Talia Gibson suffering a surprise defeat to Great Britain teenager Mika Stojsavljevic.

The 17-year-old Stojsavljevic produced a strong performance to beat the in-form Australian 7-6(4), 7-5, handing the hosts an early setback in their qualifying tie.

Australia’s position then became even more difficult when Harriet Dart recovered from a set down to defeat Kimberly Birrell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second singles match. Dart, who is ranked 173rd, showed resilience after dropping the opening set to extend Great Britain’s advantage and leave Australia facing an early exit from the competition.

The result puts additional pressure on the home side as they attempt to reach the finals. With Gibson upset in the opening match and Birrell unable to halt Dart’s comeback, Australia now find themselves on the brink after a difficult start to the qualifier.

For Great Britain, Stojsavljevic’s win over Gibson was the standout result of the day. The teenager held her nerve in the crucial moments, edging the first set in a tiebreak before closing out the match in straight sets. That victory set the tone for a strong British opening in Melbourne.

Australia entered the tie with hopes of using home conditions to their advantage, but the opening two singles results have instead placed them under immediate pressure. With the qualifying contest already tilted heavily towards Great Britain, the hosts will need a response to keep their Billie Jean King Cup hopes alive.
