Angel City co-founder says many WSL clubs are treated as “an afterthought” by owners

Kara Nortman, the co-founder of the women’s sport investment fund Monarch Collective and Angel City FC, has said many Women’s Super League clubs are treated as “an afterthought” by their owners.

Nortman’s comments come as Monarch continues to build a multi-sport investment portfolio across women’s sports. Last month, the group became the first women’s multi-sport ownership group by buying a minority stake in Cleveland WNBA, the basketball franchise.

That deal added to a portfolio that already includes the NWSL teams San Diego Wave and Boston Legacy, as well as the German club Viktoria Berlin. The expansion reflects Monarch’s growing presence in women’s football and other women’s sports markets.

The remarks also point to the wider debate around ownership standards in women’s football, particularly in England, where the Women’s Super League has expanded in visibility and commercial value while club investment remains uneven.

Nortman is among the figures helping shape a new era of women’s sports ownership, with Monarch’s activity suggesting continued interest in opportunities beyond the United States. The group’s latest investment and its existing holdings underline a strategy focused on women’s teams across different leagues and countries.
