Trump warns of fresh Iran strikes if talks fail as Lebanon and Israel agree to meet in the US

Donald Trump has warned that US warships are being reloaded with weaponry to strike Iran if Saturday’s talks in Islamabad fail to produce a deal, adding new pressure to already tense negotiations over the future of the conflict in the Middle East.

US officials have been pushing for a breakthrough in talks that could help end a war that has devastated the region. But the diplomatic effort appears increasingly precarious, with disputes over the terms of the negotiations continuing and violence still unfolding on the ground.

At the same time, JD Vance has cautioned Iran against trying to “play” the United States in the peace talks. His warning underscores the hardening public position from Washington as the weekend meeting approaches.

The streets of Islamabad are under strict lockdown as Pakistan’s capital prepares to host what have been described as historic negotiations between Iran and the US. Pakistani officials have insisted that the make-or-break talks will go ahead over the weekend as planned, despite the mounting uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire process.

Israel’s continued bombardment of Lebanon has also complicated the picture. Benjamin Netanyahu said there is no ceasefire in Lebanon, even as Israel launched fresh strikes. That latest escalation has added to concerns that the broader regional conflict could deepen further before any diplomatic agreement is reached.

In another development, Lebanon and Israel have agreed to meet in the United States. The move suggests that, alongside the Islamabad negotiations, there are now multiple diplomatic tracks attempting to address the conflict and prevent further escalation.

The ceasefire effort remains fragile, with each side accusing the other of undermining progress. The combination of military pressure, political warnings and continuing attacks has left the talks balanced between the possibility of a breakthrough and the risk of further confrontation.

For now, Islamabad remains at the centre of international attention. The planned meeting between Iran and the US is being treated as a critical test of whether diplomacy can hold, or whether the conflict will enter a new and more dangerous phase.

As the weekend approaches, officials and observers are watching closely for any sign that the negotiations will produce a deal. If they do not, Trump’s warning suggests the US is prepared to escalate further, adding to the sense that the next 24 hours could prove decisive.
