The Masters 2026: Rory McIlroy makes fast start to title defence at Augusta

Rory McIlroy made a flying start to his title defence at the 2026 Masters, sharing the early clubhouse lead with Sam Burns after the opening phase of play at Augusta National.

The first day at Augusta brought the usual mix of pressure and opportunity, with the defending champion again in contention from the outset. McIlroy’s position at the top of the board underlined a confident start to his bid to retain the green jacket, while Burns matched him to create an early tie at the summit.

For other players, however, the opening round quickly turned into a struggle against one of golf’s most demanding major venues. Carlos Ortiz, the 34-year-old Mexican making only his second Masters start and his first since 2021, endured a particularly tough beginning to his round.

Ortiz arrived at Augusta with a strong recent major record, having finished tied for fourth at last year’s US Open at Oakmont. But the Masters has a different way of testing even proven players, and his day began to unravel almost immediately.

On the second hole, he drove into the creek down the left side. Later, at the fifth, he fluffed a splash out of a fairway bunker. Those mistakes contributed to a difficult sequence of scores: 5-7-5-4-6. That run included three bogeys and two doubles, leaving him at seven over par through five holes.

At that stage, Ortiz was already in damage-limitation mode and would have been hoping simply to steady the round. Even a par at the sixth to halt the slide could not undo the early setback, but it offered at least a small chance to stop the spiralling start from becoming even worse.

Augusta National often rewards patience, but it can also punish hesitation and errors in equal measure. Ortiz’s opening stretch was a reminder of how quickly momentum can disappear on a course that leaves little room for recovery once a player falls behind the pace.

Elsewhere in the day’s coverage, attention also turned to the broader Masters storylines and to the event’s history. The 30th anniversary of a notable moment at Augusta was also marked, adding another layer of nostalgia to the opening day atmosphere.

As the tournament continued, the early leaderboard remained the main point of focus, with McIlroy and Burns setting the standard and the rest of the field trying to keep in touch. With three rounds still to come after the opening day, there was plenty of golf left to shape the story of the 2026 Masters.

For now, though, McIlroy’s rapid start to his title defence gave his supporters an encouraging first glimpse of what might lie ahead, while Ortiz’s difficulties served as an early warning of how unforgiving Augusta can be.
