Teaching in China: What to do During the Summer Holidays

If you’re planning to teach English in China, you’ll want to take advantage of most of the natural and cultural experiences available. While there’s plenty to do in the cities, it’s also worth exploring some other parts of China—and what better time than during the summer holidays?

Here are six fun ideas for your summer trip:

1. Cruise on the Li River

One of the best ways to enjoy the summer holidays in China is going on a full-day cruise on the Li River. The river winds through six counties and offers beautiful views of both natural landscapes and artificial landmarks, such as the Three Gorges Dam.

With so much to see, it’s easy to become immersed in nature and forget about your worries for a few hours, which can be very therapeutic after spending so much time indoors teaching English!

2. Check out the floating mountains in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is located in Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province. “It covers an area of 11,900 Acres” – Wikipedia. The park is famous for its many sandstone pillars and peaks and its peculiar rainforest and natural scenery.

The main attractions of this park include Tianmen Mountain, Wulingyuan Scenic Area and Yangshi Qiandongnan Miao & Dong Autonomous Prefecture.

3. The Pandas in Chengdu are a must-see

If you’re looking for a great attraction to visit during your summer break, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a top choice. There are over 80 pandas on site, and they can be seen roaming freely through their enclosures.

The pandas are most active in the morning and evening hours, so visiting at these times will provide you with the best opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. They’re also very friendly and love interacting with humans!

The giant panda is China’s national treasure; it’s also one of the world’s most endangered animals due to habitat loss (forest clearing) and poaching by humans who sell their skins on the black market.

Therefore, we must all take care of these beautiful creatures as much as possible while they still exist! Your visit to this place plays a significant role in their survival.

4. Visit the Great Wall of China

If you’re going to be in China during the summer, you must visit the Great Wall. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. If you’re looking for something to do on your day off from teaching, take a hike along one of its many routes. The scenery is breathtaking, and there’s plenty of history involved too!

While, at first glance, it may seem like an impossible feat to walk along this incredible structure, there are many ways to make your visit easier and fun. For example, every year, numerous tour groups offer tours through different parts of it; these tours usually include transportation and meals.

5. Experience the Huangguoshu Waterfall in Ashun, Guizhou

The Huangguoshu Waterfalls in Ashun, Guizhou, is the largest waterfall in China and has been named a natural wonder. The park is home to many other waterfalls and streams, as well as various caves, grottos and peaks. With so much beautiful nature to see and explore here, you will want to spend at least two days exploring this area.

There are plenty of places for lodging near the falls that are affordable for people with teaching jobs in China. There are also restaurants and shops along the way if you need supplies or food, which can be pricey depending on where you stay.

Many tourists come here from all over China during the summer holidays because it’s such an easy excursion from Beijing or Shanghai with lots of things to do when it gets hot outside!

6. Visit Jiuzhai Valley

Jiuzhai Valley is in Sichuan Province and was formed by the Minjiang River. The river cuts through a series of mountain peaks, creating a spectacular landscape of cliffs and waterfalls.

The area is known for its natural beauty and has long been a popular tourist destination for visitors worldwide. In fact, it was declared a national scenic area in 1986!

The valley is home to some of China’s most impressive scenery—and we’re not just talking about the breathtaking views. There’s also lots of wildlife in Jiuzhai Valley, including birds, fish, and even pandas!

How to plan your summer tour

While looking forward to summer, it is vital to have a plan in place. Here are some tips and tricks for planning your summer tour:

a. Plan your route ahead of time.

You should know what cities you want to visit and where they are relative to each other. If possible, try to arrange your trip so that you will visit these cities in order from north to south or vice versa (depending on where you are going). This will help keep costs down because it will be easier for you to travel between cities by train or bus than if they were scattered all over the country.

b. Keep track of your expenses.

A little research doesn’t hurt. It would help if you had an idea of how much money each city will cost before arriving there so that there aren’t any surprises when paying bills at hotels or restaurants later on down the road.

c. Purchase your tickets and accommodation early enough.

Please make sure you book tickets early enough so they don’t sell out, or else your plans may be ruined by unexpected circumstances. You can also look into booking hotels in advance—this will save you money and give you more time to explore once you arrive at each location.

d. Keep your legal documents with you at all times.

This is important for many reasons, but the most relevant are:

  • You might get stopped by police, and it’s nice to have identification on hand in case they want to see it
  • You might need to show your passport if you’re visiting certain places, and you’ll want to be able to do that quickly
  • It’s good practice when living and touring in a foreign country.

Conclusion

There’s a lot to do in China during the summer holidays, but it all comes down to personal preferences. Some people will want to take advantage of the long weekends, while others will choose to travel up into the mountains or go on beach vacations. Whichever you choose, you can be guaranteed an amazing outing in China.
