Rory McIlroy looks to embrace a “free” mindset after Masters lead slips away

Rory McIlroy heads into the final round of the Masters hoping a “free” state of mind can help him recover from a disappointing Saturday at Augusta National, where a six-shot lead disappeared and left him tied at the top with Cameron Young.

The defending champion was visibly below his best in round three, signing for a one-over-par 73 as the pressure mounted around him. After appearing firmly in control earlier in the tournament, McIlroy now faces a much different test on Sunday, with the leaderboard tightened and the margin for error reduced.

Even so, McIlroy is trying to take confidence from what he has already achieved at the same venue. The Northern Irishman won at Augusta in 2025 and said that past success could help him approach the final day with less tension.

A different mindset for Sunday

McIlroy said he wants to feel as though he is playing with a Green Jacket already in hand, suggesting that the pressure of the occasion may be easier to manage if he can remind himself of last year’s victory.

“I’d like to think that I’ll play a little bit freer and I’ll play, like I’ve already got a Green Jacket, which I do,” McIlroy said. “Sometimes I maybe just have to remind myself of that. The pairing will be just a little bit easier, the atmosphere out there will be a little bit easier.”

That outlook may be important after a round in which he did not look as sharp as he has for much of the week. McIlroy admitted that he would need to improve significantly if he is to finish the job and retain the title, but he also said he was comfortable with where he stands.

“I wish I was a few shots better off but I’m comfortable,” he said.

The comments point to a player aware of the challenge ahead but determined not to let the collapse in his lead define the day to come. Instead, McIlroy will try to rely on experience, composure and the memory of his 2025 triumph as he prepares for another Masters Sunday.

With Young alongside him at the summit, McIlroy now faces a direct battle for the Green Jacket rather than the more comfortable position he held earlier in the tournament. The final round promises a very different kind of test, one shaped by pressure, expectation and the need to respond after a shaky third day.

For McIlroy, the task is clear: rediscover the form that gave him command of the Masters and turn a difficult Saturday into one more winning Sunday at Augusta.
