Rory McIlroy looks to a freer mindset after Masters lead slips away

Rory McIlroy will take the final round of the Masters tied at the top of the leaderboard with Cameron Young after a difficult Saturday ended with his six-shot advantage gone. The defending champion was visibly below his best during a one-over-par 73, leaving him with work to do if he is to retain the Green Jacket.

Even so, McIlroy said he hopes to benefit from a “freer” state of mind on Sunday. The Northern Irishman pointed to the value of already having won at Augusta National, where he claimed the title in 2025. That experience, he suggested, could help him relax more than he might otherwise in the final group.

“I’d like to think that I’ll play a little bit freer and I’ll play, like I’ve already got a Green Jacket, which I do,” McIlroy said. “Sometimes I maybe just have to remind myself of that. The pairing will be just a little bit easier, the atmosphere out there will be a little bit easier.”

McIlroy acknowledged that he is not in the position he wanted after surrendering his lead, saying: “I wish I was a few shots better off but I’m comfortable.” His comments reflected both disappointment at the way the third round unfolded and confidence that he can still respond on the final day.

The Saturday round marked a clear shift in the championship. McIlroy began the day with a six-stroke cushion, but by the end of play he had been pulled back by Young, setting up a tight finish for the tournament’s last 18 holes. The gap closed as McIlroy struggled to produce his best golf, while his rivals made ground.

That leaves the Masters poised for a tense conclusion, with McIlroy chasing another major title and Young sharing the lead heading into Sunday. For McIlroy, the task is straightforward but demanding: improve significantly on his third-round performance and use the familiarity of having already won at Augusta to settle into the final round with less pressure.

The defending champion’s chance of another Green Jacket now depends on whether he can turn a disappointing third round into a stronger finish. He has made clear, though, that he intends to lean on past success and keep his approach as relaxed as the situation allows.
