Real Madrid held at home by Girona as winless run continues

Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at home by mid-table Girona on Friday, a result that extended the hosts’ winless run to three games in all competitions and left Barcelona with an opportunity to strengthen their grip on the La Liga title race.

Fans at the Bernabéu voiced their frustration as Madrid followed recent defeats to Mallorca and Bayern with another disappointing result. Federico Valverde appeared to have put the hosts on course for a much-needed win when he struck six minutes after half-time, but Girona responded and levelled in the 62nd minute through Thomas Lemar.

The draw keeps Madrid six points behind league leaders Barcelona, who still have a game in hand against Espanyol on Saturday. If Barcelona win that match, they could move nine points clear with seven games left to play.

For Madrid, the result adds to a difficult spell and increases the pressure as the season enters its decisive stage. A home draw against a side from the middle of the table would normally be a missed opportunity; given the recent form, it felt like another setback in a run that has raised fresh questions about consistency.

Girona, meanwhile, took a valuable point from one of the toughest away fixtures in Spain. Their second-half equaliser ensured they left with something to show for a disciplined performance after falling behind early in the second half.

The match also underlined how quickly the balance at the top of the table could shift over the weekend. Barcelona’s meeting with Espanyol now carries added significance, with Madrid watching from behind and aware that the title race could become even more difficult to control.

With seven matches remaining after Saturday’s fixtures, the margin for error is shrinking. Madrid will need to respond quickly if they are to keep pace with Barcelona, while Girona’s result in Madrid offered another reminder that points can be dropped against any opponent at this stage of the campaign.
