PSG raise the level to leave Liverpool and Slot facing a harsh reality

These are unusual days for Liverpool Football Club, even if they remain, for now, the champions of England. On a surprisingly low-drama night in Paris, there were still a few reasons for Liverpool to feel encouraged. But those positives came wrapped in the uncomfortable sense that being pleased was not quite the same as being satisfied.

Liverpool could at least take heart from the fact that their players did not give up or stop trying. That much was evident throughout the match, and it mattered. They also escaped with a 2-0 defeat rather than something more damaging against a Paris Saint-Germain side who were in such control that they could afford to treat the game with a degree of freedom and flair.

PSG were able to play with confidence and even a touch of carelessness, as if the first leg were an opportunity to display style as much as substance. Their approach to scoring had an almost extravagant quality, far removed from anything functional or plain. At times they seemed determined to turn each attack into something elaborate and polished, less a direct route to goal than a performance of elegance.

That contrast said plenty about the gap between the teams on the night. Liverpool were competitive, but PSG looked the stronger, smoother and more complete side. They made the match appear comfortable in a way that underlined the difference in class, even if the scoreline leaves room for the idea that the tie is not yet settled.

There will, of course, be talk of another Anfield miracle in the second leg. Liverpool’s history in Europe ensures that possibility will be discussed and encouraged. But the evidence from Paris was hard to ignore. PSG were the better team in almost every important respect, and they looked capable of producing more whenever they chose to do so.

For Liverpool and Arne Slot, this was a reminder of how quickly perception can change. The reigning English champions still have standing, but they were made to look like a side from another era by PSG’s pace, precision and ease on the ball. The result does not end the contest, but it does place Liverpool under real pressure.

In that sense, the night belonged to PSG. They were stylish without being forced, dominant without needing to overstate it, and comfortable enough to make a strong Liverpool side look as though they were chasing the game from a different level altogether.
