Police in New York City shot and killed a man after he stabbed three people on a subway platform at Grand Central station, according to the city’s police commissioner.
Jessica Tisch, who leads the New York Police Department, said at a news conference at the station that officers were flagged down by a witness to the stabbings at about 9.40am. When they encountered the suspect, he was armed with a machete, police said.
Tisch said the man defied at least 20 verbal orders to drop the weapon. During the confrontation, he repeatedly stated that he was “Lucifer”, according to police.
The attack left three people wounded. Police did not immediately provide additional details about the condition of the victims.
The incident unfolded at one of New York City’s busiest transit hubs, drawing a swift police response inside Grand Central station. Authorities have not released further information about the suspect’s identity.
The shooting is the latest violent episode to unfold in the city’s transit system and comes amid continuing concern over public safety in major subway stations. Police said their response began only after a witness alerted officers at the scene.
Officials have not said what led up to the stabbing or whether the suspect had any prior connection to the victims. The investigation is ongoing.
