Leicester lose appeal over six-point deduction in blow to survival hopes

Leicester have confirmed that their appeal against a six-point deduction for breaching English Football League financial rules has been unsuccessful, deepening the club’s relegation trouble in the Championship.

An independent commission imposed the sanction in February. The punishment initially dropped Leicester from 17th to 20th in the table, and the club’s position has since worsened further. Leicester are now 22nd, one point adrift of safety, with five fixtures remaining.

The club said it is now “fully focused” on the closing stage of the season, as the fight to avoid relegation continues.

The decision leaves Leicester facing the possibility of dropping into League One just a decade after winning the Premier League. That prospect underlines the scale of the challenge now confronting the club, which is currently managed by Gary Rowett.

What had begun as a points dispute has become a much bigger survival battle. With only five games left, Leicester must now try to recover quickly on the pitch while carrying the impact of the six-point sanction off it.

The appeal outcome means the original punishment stands, leaving Leicester with no further relief from the ruling that triggered their slide into the bottom end of the Championship.

The club’s immediate priority is clear: gather points, move out of the relegation places and avoid a sharp decline that would see them fall into the third tier of English football.

For Leicester, the final stretch of the campaign now carries major consequences. The margin for error is gone, and the club’s survival hopes rest on results in the remaining five matches.
