Grand National 2026: I Am Maximus wins big race for second time at Aintree – live

Grand National day at Aintree brought the latest round of horse racing action, with the Maghull Novice Chase providing an early highlight on the card. The contest unfolded at a lively pace, with several runners eager to go forward from the start.

Be Aware jumped to the right at the first fence but still managed to press on and take the lead. Salvatore Mundi then moved up strongly through the field to join the pace near the front, although the market leader was not as fluent as expected in the early stages.

As the runners turned for home, the leaders remained tightly grouped. Kala Conti was preparing to make a challenge but fell at the third-last fence, ending that effort abruptly. That incident opened the door for Mirabad, who was poised to strike at the right moment.

Mirabad then took up the running and pulled clear to win comfortably. It was another significant success for Dan Skelton, the leading trainer on the day, who collected a major prize at Aintree.

Maghull Novice Chase betting

  • Salvator Mundi – 11/10
  • Kala Conti – 11/4
  • Mighty Bandit – 7/1
  • Be Aware – 10/1
  • No Questions Asked – 20/1
  • Alnilam – 22/1
  • Mirabad – 50/1
  • King Of Kingsfield – 50/1

The race had been billed as one with plenty of early speed, and that proved to be the case. Be Aware went on from the outset, while Salvatore Mundi advanced with purpose to ensure a strong tempo. The favourite, however, was not particularly fluent, and that left the race open as the field approached the final stages.

With the challenge of Kala Conti disappearing after the fall, Mirabad seized the initiative and finished best of all. The result underlined how quickly fortunes can change in a race at Aintree, where pressure and precision over the fences often decide the outcome.

The early part of the day also reflected the broader atmosphere of Grand National Saturday, with attention fixed not only on the headline race but also on the supporting card. Updates from the meeting continued throughout the afternoon, alongside Tom Jenkins’s Aintree gallery and the guide to all of the runners.

The Maghull Novice Chase delivered drama, setbacks and a clear finish, all within a few frantic minutes. For Skelton, it was a further reminder of his strength at major meetings, as Mirabad surged away for an easy win after a race that had looked set to hinge on the closing fences.

More updates from Aintree continued to follow as Grand National day unfolded.
