Eric Adams granted Albanian citizenship and passport, reports say

Former New York City mayor Eric Adams has obtained citizenship and a passport from Albania, according to reports from the Balkan country on Friday.

The Albania Daily News first reported that Adams had requested both documents and was granted them by special decree from Albania’s president, Bajram Begaj. A spokesperson for Adams confirmed the development in a statement distributed to the news media.

The granting of citizenship was also said to have been recorded in Albania’s official government journal.

Adams had previously visited the country months earlier, when he offered effusive praise for Albania. The new reports suggest that the relationship between the former mayor and the Balkan nation has now taken a formal turn, with both citizenship and a passport issued through the presidential decree.

No further details were included in the initial reports about the reasons for the request or the terms of the decree. But the confirmation from Adams’s team and the publication of the decision in the government journal indicate that the matter has now been made official in Albania.
