Types of antennas – which one is right for you?

Antennas are made for specific purposes. For example, the purpose of the antenna can be to get range over the largest possible area. Or you want to limit the range to a specific area. Another goal may be to get as far as possible.

There are roughly two types of antennas:

Omnidirectional antenna: broadcast in all directions (around antenna, so 360 degrees)

Directional Antenna: Transmit to a specific direction. These antennas differ per opening angle. Therefore, they can be divided into:

  • Patch: Often transmit at an angle of 180 degrees or less.
  • Sector: Often transmit at an angle of 120 degrees or less.
  • Yagi: often transmit at an angle of 30 to 80 degrees.
  • Parabolic: often transmit at an angle of 10 degrees or less.

Expand coverage area

By choosing the right version, it is possible to increase the coverage area of ​​your WiFi signal. You can choose from two types. The first is the high gain omnidirectional antenna. With a higher gain, you have a stronger signal, increasing the range of your Wi-Fi network. This makes it possible to achieve a reasonable signal gain. A high gain type also has unexpected drawbacks. In order to realize the antenna amplification, the radiation pattern is modified. In practice this means that power normally transmitted upwards and downwards is now bundled in the horizontal plane. If a device is in the horizontal plane of the radiation, it will receive a stronger WiFi signal. For example, if a device is on the first floor, it will receive a weaker WiFi signal. You can also opt for a directional WiFi antenna. This directs the transmitting power in a specific direction. These are ideal if you want to improve the WiFi range in your garden.

Test results

Directional antennas focus all energy in one direction. As a result, the WiFi signal is in any case further than with a standard omnidirectional antenna. The more a directional antenna focuses on a direction, the further the range is. On the other hand, the total area of ​​the range decreases, because the focus is on a more specific area. 

Do I need to replace all current antennas?

Many USB adapters, access points and WiFi routers have more than one WiFi antenna. These antennas are often used in combination or alternately. Have you found a more suitable antenna? For this reason, it is wise to replace all current antennas. If you don’t do this, the more suitable antenna will be of little use.
