Carrick fumes over Martínez red card after United defeat to Leeds

Michael Carrick has described Lisandro Martínez’s red card for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair as a “shocking” decision after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat by Leeds at Old Trafford on Monday night.

United are considering whether to appeal the dismissal, with Martínez now facing a three-match ban if the punishment stands.

The incident came after 56 minutes, when Paul Tierney reviewed the challenge on the monitor and decided it merited a red card. At that stage Leeds were already 2-0 ahead.

Carrick strongly rejected the call, arguing that the action did not amount to aggression. “It is not aggressive, there is no jolt,” he said.

The sending off could have wider consequences for United’s next match. Carrick may be without both of his first-choice centre-backs for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, with Harry Maguire also at risk of missing a second game through suspension.

Leeds’ victory at Old Trafford was highlighted as an impressive result, with Daniel Farke hailing the win as “amazing.”

For United, the dismissal of Martínez added to an already difficult night and left Carrick frustrated by both the decision itself and the possible impact on his defensive options in the days ahead.
