Bayern Munich produced another dominant performance in the Bundesliga, beating hosts St Pauli 5-0 to set an all-time league scoring record for a single season and move even closer to the title.
The result took Bayern to 76 points and extended their lead at the top of the table to 12 points with five games left to play. They are now within touching distance of the championship, with second-placed Borussia Dortmund on 64 points after losing 1-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen.
The victory at St Pauli also marked Bayern’s 102nd league goal of the season, underlining the attacking power that has driven their title charge. The Bavarian club have now put themselves in a commanding position domestically as the season enters its final stretch.
Attention at Bayern now turns briefly to Europe. The German side host Real Madrid on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, after winning 2-1 in Spain.
Barcelona also win convincingly
Elsewhere in European football, Barcelona recorded a 4-1 win over Espanyol, helped by a Ferran Torres double. The result added to a positive day for one of Europe’s leading clubs, though Bayern’s record-breaking league display was the main headline from the fixtures.
For Bayern, the scale of the St Pauli win added another milestone to a season already defined by goals and control. With the title race now heavily tilted in their favour, their remaining league matches appear to be a formality compared with the challenge still awaiting them in the Champions League.
The combination of domestic dominance and European ambition leaves Bayern in a strong position on both fronts, with the next few days likely to shape the final stages of their season.
