Australia crash out of Billie Jean King Cup after Britain complete 3-0 upset

Australia have been knocked out of Billie Jean King Cup contention after an understrength Great Britain completed a 3-0 upset in their qualifying tie at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena.

Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart wrapped up the result for the visitors on Saturday, beating Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles. Their victory confirmed Britain’s clean sweep after they had also won both opening-day singles matches.

The result means Australia will miss the Billie Jean King Cup finals for a second straight year, a setback that came after team captain Sam Stosur had warned of the possibility of a “funky” upset.

Britain arrived with a shortened line-up but still proved too strong across the tie, taking control early and never allowing Australia back into the contest. The doubles match sealed the outcome in straightforward fashion and left the home side with no route back.

For Australia, the defeat adds to the disappointment of another missed opportunity in the competition. Playing at home in Melbourne, they were unable to recover from the singles losses and could not force the tie into a final-day fightback.

Great Britain, meanwhile, claimed an impressive away result by finishing the contest in three matches. Burrage and Dart, a new doubles pairing for the tie, delivered the decisive performance to close out the upset.

The 3-0 scoreline reflected Britain’s control over the qualifying meeting, with Australia’s challenge undone before the weekend was complete. The hosts now turn their attention to regrouping after another early exit from the Billie Jean King Cup race.

Saturday’s result underlined how quickly a qualifying tie can swing when momentum is seized early. Britain did that from the first day and maintained their advantage through to the final point, leaving Australia with a second consecutive year outside the finals picture.
