Apple iPad Air M4 review: still the premium tablet to beat

The latest iPad Air is a substantial upgrade across most of the areas that matter, not just a routine processor refresh. Apple has fitted the tablet with M4 silicon and improved much of the internal hardware that supports everyday use, giving the device laptop-level power in a thin, adaptable touchscreen format.

For 2026, the iPad Air M4 keeps the same starting price as last year’s M3 model, with prices from £599, €649, $599 or A$999. It is again available in two sizes: an 11in version and a larger 13in version. The smaller model remains the more practical choice for most people, while the 13in edition is aimed at anyone looking for something closer to a second television or even a laptop replacement.

Power and performance

The headline change is the move to Apple’s M4 processor, which brings an 8-core CPU and 9-core GPU. The tablet also comes with 12GB of RAM, helping it feel better equipped for demanding apps and heavier multitasking. That extra headroom is part of what makes the new iPad Air feel more like a portable computer than a traditional tablet.

Storage options range from 128GB to 1TB, with 256GB and 512GB models in between. The device runs iPadOS 26.3, which supports the improved multitasking experience that helps the Air move beyond simple streaming and web browsing.

Display and design

Apple continues to offer the iPad Air in 11in and 13in Liquid Retina display versions, both at 264ppi. The design remains slim, with the two models measuring just 6.1mm thick. The 11in version measures 247.6 x 178.5 x 6.1mm and weighs 464g, while the 13in model measures 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.1mm and weighs 616g.

The tablet keeps the familiar balance of portability and screen space that has made the Air line popular. The 11in model is easier to carry and use one-handed, while the 13in screen gives more room for video, split-screen work and creative tasks.

Connectivity and features

Connectivity has also been upgraded. The new iPad Air includes Wifi 7, 5G with eSim only, Bluetooth 6 and USB-C with USB3 support. It also retains Touch ID, Apple’s Smart Connector and a 12MP rear camera. On the front, there is a 12MP Centre Stage camera for video calls.

These changes help the iPad Air feel more current as a work and entertainment device. Faster wireless support should be useful for users with modern routers and mobile networks, while the USB-C connection keeps the tablet flexible for accessories and charging.

A premium tablet in the middle of the range

As Apple’s middle-tier tablet, the iPad Air continues to sit in an important position in the lineup. It is not as expensive as the Pro models, but it now offers enough power and hardware improvements to make a strong case for itself. That combination of speed, portability and versatility keeps it among the most compelling tablets available.

For people who want more than a media viewer, the iPad Air M4 looks well suited to the job. It is fast, light and capable, with enough screen size, battery-friendly portability and accessory support to serve as a serious everyday device.

In short, Apple has kept the iPad Air on familiar ground while improving the parts that matter most. The result is a premium tablet that remains highly capable, whether used for work, entertainment or something in between.
