Anger over ‘bloody unacceptable’ lack of urgency as Sudan’s war enters its fourth year

Efforts to end Sudan’s devastating war have been described as “unacceptable” by the country’s top UN official, as fresh reports confirm that the world’s largest humanitarian crisis continues to deteriorate.

Speaking to the Guardian on the eve of the conflict’s third anniversary, Denise Brown said she was deeply concerned by the apparent absence of political urgency around a war that has forced 14 million Sudanese people from their homes.

Tens of thousands of people are also missing, adding to the scale of suffering in a conflict that has already pushed the country into an extraordinary humanitarian emergency.

The criticism comes as new reports point to worsening conditions across Sudan, where the war has devastated communities, displaced millions and left aid agencies struggling to meet growing needs.

Brown’s comments reflect mounting frustration among humanitarian officials over the lack of progress toward ending the fighting. Despite the scale of the crisis, the conflict has shown no sign of slowing, and international efforts have failed to produce a breakthrough.

Sudan’s war is now entering its fourth year, with the toll on civilians continuing to rise. The latest warnings underline how the crisis has become not only a national catastrophe but also the biggest humanitarian emergency in the world.

As the anniversary passes, the central concern remains the same: without stronger political pressure and more urgent diplomacy, the suffering is likely to deepen further. For millions of displaced Sudanese, the prospect of safety and return remains uncertain.
