House Democrats propose commission with JD Vance to consider Trump’s removal under 25th amendment

House Democrats on Tuesday proposed creating a commission that would work with JD Vance to remove Donald Trump from office under the 25th amendment if he were found no longer fit to serve.

The measure was introduced by Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House judiciary committee. It comes after a series of recent statements and images involving Trump that Democrats say raise fresh questions about his fitness for office.

Among the episodes cited were Trump’s warning that Iran’s “whole civilization will die” if it did not capitulate to his demands, as well as a social media post that depicted him as Jesus Christ.

The proposal does not itself remove Trump from office. Instead, it would create a commission that could assess whether he is able to carry out the duties of the presidency and, if not, work with the vice-president under the constitutional process set out in the 25th amendment.

Raskin’s move reflects a renewed push by House Democrats to elevate concerns about Trump’s conduct and rhetoric. The proposal also places JD Vance at the center of any potential constitutional process, should the commission determine that Trump is unable to serve.

The measure is the latest political challenge to emerge from Trump’s remarks on Iran and the online image circulated in his likeness. Democrats have increasingly focused on whether such statements signal instability or a disregard for the responsibilities of the presidency.

The Guardian report did not say whether the proposal has enough support to advance, but the introduction of the measure marks a notable escalation in efforts by House Democrats to invoke the 25th amendment framework.
