The humble matchbox gets a luxury makeover as Selfridges sales jump 121%

Goodbye Swan Vesta, hello Cartier. The humble matchbox, long treated as a basic household item, has been reimagined as a luxury accessory, with some versions now carrying eye-catching price tags.

According to Selfridges, sales of “posh” matchboxes are up 121% year-on-year. The upmarket department store chain has gone so far as to describe them as “the must-have home accessory for 2026”.

The surge in demand has pushed the retailer to more than double its range. It now sells more than 100 styles of matchboxes, with prices starting at £5 and rising to more than £230.

The shift reflects a wider trend in home accessories, where everyday objects are being turned into design-led statement pieces. In this case, a product once associated with pure utility has been given a premium reinvention, with branding and presentation becoming part of its appeal.

Selfridges’ expanded selection suggests that buyers are treating matchboxes less as disposable necessities and more as decorative items, gifts, or collector-style purchases. The broad price range also shows how far the category has moved from its low-cost origins.

Whether the appeal lies in the design, the branding, or simply the novelty of turning a routine object into a talking point, the matchbox is having an unexpected moment. For now, it appears the little box of matches has ignited strong interest among shoppers looking for something a little more polished than the traditional Swan Vesta.

The rise of luxury matchboxes may be surprising, but the numbers at Selfridges make the trend hard to ignore. What was once a modest household essential has become, at least for the moment, one of the more unusual symbols of home style in 2026.
