Police kill suspect after Grand Central subway machete attack leaves three wounded

Police in New York City shot and killed a man who stabbed three people on a subway platform at Grand Central station, according to the city’s police commissioner.

The attack unfolded on Saturday morning at one of the city’s busiest transit hubs. Officers were flagged down by a witness to the stabbings at about 9.40am, police commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference held at the station.

According to Tisch, officers then encountered a suspect armed with a machete. Police said he ignored at least 20 verbal orders to drop the weapon. During the confrontation, he repeatedly said “that he was Lucifer,” Tisch told reporters.

The three people wounded in the attack were injured on the station’s subway platform. Police did not immediately provide further details about their conditions in the source report.

Grand Central station, a major transportation center in Manhattan, remained at the center of police attention after the incident as investigators responded to the scene.

The shooting followed the stabbing attack in a matter of minutes after officers were alerted, according to the account given by police. The police department described the suspect as refusing repeated commands before officers opened fire.

No additional information about the suspect, the victims, or the circumstances leading up to the attack was included in the source report.
