Essex v Somerset, Surrey v Leicestershire and more: County Championship live, day two

The second round of County Championship fixtures continued on day two with live updates from several grounds, including Essex v Somerset and Surrey v Leicestershire.

At Old Trafford, the weather in Manchester was described as frisking around, but play was still under way. Derbyshire had recovered a little after losing a wicket to the final ball of the previous day, and reached 37-1, still 314 runs behind.

Elsewhere, Somerset had built on a strong position at Essex after a long trip from Abergavenny for one of their players. The chance of an early breakthrough went begging when he was dropped at first slip on nought by Dean Elgar, who fumbled the ball in the tummy region. Shane Snater slumped back to his mark, and Somerset moved to 213-6 with a lead of 64.

The live coverage tracked the second day’s progress across the Championship, with attention on how the early sessions might shape the round’s key contests. With totals still being established and wickets in hand at several venues, the morning developments suggested another day in which momentum could shift quickly.

Updates from the round continued through the day, with readers also directed to sign up for The Spin newsletter or get in touch by email or via the live blog comments.

As the matches unfolded, Essex and Somerset remained closely balanced in one of the main fixtures, while Derbyshire’s position at Old Trafford left them still chasing the game after the setback at the close of play on day one. More updates were expected as the Championship action moved deeper into the second day.
