‘Just the beginning’: Artemis II crew splashes down after record-breaking moon flyby

The Artemis II mission ended on Friday night when the Orion space capsule carrying four astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, concluding a historic 10-day journey around the moon.

All four astronauts were reported to be in good health after the landing, marking a successful end to a mission that has been described as a major step in the next era of human space exploration.

The return to Earth came after a record-breaking flyby that pushed the crew farther into deep space than any previous crewed mission of its kind in more than five decades. The splashdown off California brought the spacecraft home following days of travel beyond the moon and back toward Earth.

Speaking at a late-night press conference after the landing, NASA associate administrator Amit Kshatriya said the mission represented more than a one-time achievement. He framed it as the beginning of a renewed push to return humans to the moon and remain there.

“53 years ago, humanity left the moon. This time we return to stay. Let us finish what they started. Let us focus on what was left undone. Let us not go to plant flags and leave, but to stay with firmness in our purpose, with gratitude for the hands who built the machines and with love for the ones that we carry with us,” Kshatriya said.

Artemis II is part of NASA’s broader effort to build on the legacy of Apollo and prepare for future lunar missions. Friday’s splashdown brought the mission to a close, but NASA leaders signaled that it was only a starting point for what comes next.

The safe return of the crew adds momentum to the Artemis programme, which aims to deepen human presence beyond Earth orbit and support longer-term exploration of the moon. For the astronauts involved, the mission ended where it began: with a successful homecoming after a journey that tested spacecraft, procedures and the next stage of lunar exploration.
