Rory McIlroy surges into six-shot Masters lead with stunning second-round flourish

Rory McIlroy has turned the halfway point of the 2026 Masters into a position of serious control, opening up a six-shot lead after a blistering second-round finish at Augusta National.

The defending champion, who won the tournament in 2025, arrived as the man to beat and did little to soften that status. After 16 years spent trying to catch the field, McIlroy is now embracing the pressure of being the hunted. At 36, he has the chance to become only the fourth player in history to win consecutive Masters titles.

McIlroy’s surge came in emphatic fashion, with six birdies in his final seven holes helping him pull clear of the chasing pack. The run left him with daylight between himself and his nearest rivals and reinforced the sense that he is in confident, composed form at the right time.

There was plenty of attention around his champions dinner earlier in the week, where elk was served as sliders on Tuesday evening. By the end of the second round, however, it was McIlroy who had left his opponents scrambling.

Behind him, the leaderboard remained crowded. Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed were tied at six under par, while Justin Rose, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood sat at five under. But none managed to match McIlroy’s late charge.

The significance of McIlroy’s position extends beyond the immediate lead. He is no stranger to the demands of major championships, and the form he showed in the closing stretch underlined why he is viewed as the clear favourite from here. With 36 holes still to play, he is well placed to become the first back-to-back Masters winner since the modern era’s greats set the standard.

McIlroy’s record at Augusta has long carried the weight of expectation, but this week he has looked notably settled. That relaxed state of mind appears to have sharpened rather than dulled his edge, allowing him to play with the authority of someone fully at ease in the role of champion.

For years, McIlroy was defined by pursuit. Now he is trying to hold onto the prize he finally claimed in 2025. If the second round was any indication, he is intent on making that task as difficult as possible for everyone else.
