The Masters 2026: Rory McIlroy shares lead with Sam Burns after first round

Rory McIlroy made a strong start to his Masters title defence at Augusta National, sharing the lead with Sam Burns after the first round of the 2026 tournament. The opening day set up an intriguing contest at the top of the leaderboard, with McIlroy immediately placing himself in contention as he bid to defend the green jacket.

Augusta, as ever, offered a stern test. The course demanded precision and punished mistakes, keeping the first-round action tense throughout the day. McIlroy’s position at the top reflected a composed and competitive start, while Burns matched him to keep the lead shared heading into the next round.

One of the more difficult stories from the day belonged to Carlos Ortiz. The 34-year-old Mexican, making only his second Masters appearance and his first since 2021, endured a frustrating opening stretch. Ortiz arrived at Augusta with notable major-championship credentials after tying for fourth at last year’s US Open at Oakmont, but the Masters proved immediately unforgiving.

His round unraveled early. A drive into the creek down the left side of the second hole set him back, and the problems continued at the fifth, where he fluffed a splash out of a fairway bunker. By that point, Ortiz had opened with scores of 5-7-5-4-6, a run that included three bogeys and two doubles. At seven over par through five holes, he was already fighting simply to steady the round.

A par at the sixth offered little relief beyond ending the immediate damage. It was the sort of start that underlined how quickly Augusta National can turn even experienced players against the ropes, especially on a day when mistakes were being sharply exposed.

The opening round also carried a sense of history beyond the leaderboard. The day marked the 30th anniversary of one of the tournament’s more memorable moments, a reminder that the Masters is often shaped by both present drama and past legacy.

For McIlroy, though, the focus remained on the task at hand: defending his title and navigating the pressure that comes with leading at Augusta. Sharing the top spot after round one is only a first step, but it is a promising one. With Burns beside him and the field still tightly bunched behind, the Masters was poised for a competitive second day.

As the tournament continued, the early storyline was clear. McIlroy had come out swinging in his bid to retain the championship, Burns had matched him shot for shot, and players like Ortiz were already discovering just how severe Augusta National can be when rhythm disappears. The first round offered a familiar Masters mix of opportunity, disappointment and the promise of more twists to come.
