Flight of the Conchords have sold out their first shows in eight years within minutes, after Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement announced four reunion gigs in Wellington.
The New Zealand comedy duo will perform at the Meow Nui venue from next week, in what will be their first live dates since 2018. The rapid sellout triggered a surge of interest from fans eager to see the pair back on stage.
McKenzie and Clement formed Flight of the Conchords in 1998. They later became internationally known through their HBO comedy series of the same name, which helped turn their musical sketches into a global phenomenon.
Among the act’s best-known songs are Business Time and Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros. The duo have long described themselves, with characteristic understatement, as the “fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo-a cappella-rap-funk-comedy-folk duo” from New Zealand.
The reunion gigs mark a notable return for the pair, whose blend of music and comedy won them a devoted following far beyond their home country. The sellout in minutes suggests that demand remains strong for the act, even after years away from the live circuit.
The shows at Meow Nui are set to be the duo’s first performances together in eight years, adding to the anticipation around the brief run of dates in Wellington.
