The Masters 2026: McIlroy begins title defence, strong starts for Fleetwood and Reed – live

Coverage from the opening round of the 2026 Masters continues at Augusta National, where Rory McIlroy has started the defence of his title and early signs have been promising for Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Reed.

The first day at Augusta is already producing the familiar mix of pressure, momentum swings and harsh punishment that defines the tournament. As ever, the course has left little room for error, even for players with strong major-championship resumes.

One of the most difficult openings so far has belonged to Carlos Ortiz. The 34-year-old Mexican is making only his second Masters appearance, and his first since 2021. Ortiz arrives with credentials that suggest he can compete at the highest level, after finishing tied for fourth at last year’s US Open at Oakmont. But Augusta National has quickly turned his round into a struggle.

His start has been severe. Ortiz drove into the creek down the left at the second hole, then later fluffed a splash out of a fairway bunker at the fifth. His card has moved through a damaging sequence of 5-7-5-4-6, leaving him with three bogeys and two double bogeys in the early stages of the round.

At seven over par through five holes, he is already facing a long climb back into contention. Even a par at the sixth, which would stop the immediate bleeding, would do little to change the frustration of such a difficult opening at one of golf’s most demanding venues.

The round also comes with a sense of history. It is the 30th anniversary of one notable Masters moment remembered by long-time followers of the tournament, adding another layer to a day that is already full of discussion about Augusta’s unforgiving nature.

As the first round develops, the leaderboard remains in motion and the latest updates continue to track the players seeking to make an early move. McIlroy’s title defence, along with positive starts from Fleetwood and Reed, provides a strong narrative at the top of the field, while others are simply trying to limit the damage on a course that rarely offers an easy recovery.

With Augusta National setting the tone once again, the opening round has already underlined why the Masters remains one of the toughest tests in golf. A few players have made bright starts, but for others, including Ortiz, the challenge has come quickly and with little mercy.

Further updates are expected as the day continues, with the official leaderboard reflecting how quickly fortunes can change over 18 holes at Augusta.
