Ukraine ceasefire returns to the spotlight as US backing for guarantees weakens and casualties rise

As a ceasefire was declared in the Middle East, Volodymyr Zelenskyy turned attention back to the war in Ukraine, using social media to stress that Kyiv has consistently pushed for an end to what he described as a conflict “being waged by Russia here, in Europe”.

His intervention comes at a moment when efforts to halt the fighting in Ukraine have largely stalled. Diplomacy that once held out the possibility of progress has been overtaken by other international crises, and the war between Russia and Ukraine has continued without pause.

Talks involving Kyiv, Moscow and Washington had already produced little of substance before they were frozen in February 2026. Since then, the negotiations have remained on hold, while the battlefield situation has worsened and the diplomatic path toward a ceasefire has become more uncertain.

Diplomatic divisions add to concern

One of the central worries now is the widening gap between Washington and European capitals. That split has fuelled concern over how firm the US commitment would be to any future peace deal or security arrangement for Ukraine.

The issue of security guarantees has become especially sensitive as support from the US appears less assured. European governments have watched closely for signs of whether Washington would remain fully engaged in backing a settlement and in helping deter future Russian aggression if a ceasefire were reached.

At the same time, the war on the ground has shown little sign of slowing. Russian forces have continued air attacks on Ukrainian cities, while heavy fighting has persisted across the battlefields as Moscow presses ahead with a spring offensive.

Fighting continues while talks remain frozen

The combination of stalled diplomacy and renewed battlefield pressure has left Ukraine in a difficult position. With the ceasefire process effectively on ice, the conflict has remained active and destructive, placing further strain on civilians and military forces alike.

Zelenskyy’s message was a reminder that, despite shifting global attention, Ukraine’s leadership is still seeking a ceasefire and a broader political settlement. But with the trilateral track suspended and international priorities changing, the prospects for restarting meaningful negotiations remain uncertain.

For now, the war continues to shape events in Europe even as other crises dominate the international agenda. Ukraine’s call for a ceasefire has not gone away, but the diplomatic momentum needed to make it happen appears to have weakened further.

As a result, concern is growing that any eventual peace deal could be harder to secure, and harder still to guarantee, if the divisions among Ukraine’s allies deepen and the fighting on the ground continues at its current pace.
