Medvedev smashes racket in 6-0, 6-0 Monte Carlo defeat to Berrettini

Daniil Medvedev suffered one of the heaviest defeats of his career at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Italian wildcard Matteo Berrettini in just 49 minutes.

The world No 10 reacted angrily during the match, smashing his racket several times before placing the broken remains in a courtside dustbin. The loss was Medvedev’s first at tour level in which he failed to win a single game.

Medvedev never found any rhythm against Berrettini and was unable to create a break in the contest. He did not earn a game point on his own serve and finished with 27 unforced errors, a stat that underlined how completely the match slipped away from him.

Berrettini, whose run in Monte Carlo continued with a commanding performance, will now meet João Fonseca in the last 16. The Brazilian teenager reached that stage after defeating Arthur Rinderknech 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

The result added to a difficult day for Medvedev, whose frustration was visible as the match unfolded. Berrettini, by contrast, produced a composed and clinical display to seal one of the standout wins of the tournament so far.

For Medvedev, the defeat will be remembered not only for the scoreline but also for the manner of it. A double-bagel loss is rare at this level, and his inability to get on the board at all made the setback particularly striking.

Berrettini’s victory sent him into the next round with momentum, while Medvedev was left to reflect on a startling and unexpectedly swift exit from Monte Carlo.
