There is a lot of gaps between what is required to enable them and what 5G network actually deliver. 5G Action Items

To get better with these challenges, we need to think about our testing methods from up to down:

  • Getting back to fundamentals. Just because something worked in a 4G environment, we cannot pre-assume that (or security, or interoperability) in 5G. We should test all these things for what they are: brand-new technologies.
  • Expecting much more testing. We are no more measuring bytes of a network appliance interface. We should test the interplay of dozens of virtualized nodal functions, in different ways, at scale. As we implement more use cases, we also need to test a much wider range of functionality. Streaming 4K video gives very different requirements than passing instructions to driverless vehicles.
  • Preparing for an ongoing effort. Don’t predict to reach a time when testing is complete. Users need to continuously validate standards compliance, performance, security, across the lifecycle—And users need to repeat that effort whenever any shifting in the environment.
  • To ask for help: It might have made sense for operators and vendors to conduct testing. With all the new components and complexity that come with 5G where that model no more works.

The good news is that, when you reimagine testing for 5G, users will get more confidence. users will know that vendor claims are validated. And when you’re ready to roll out futuristic new services, users will trust all the pieces of the puzzle to work together the way they should. Just as important, users will get to that point more quickly. So, users can not only bring amazing new experiences to customers, users can do it before anyone else.
